Tips Before Starting Your Own Used Car Dealership

Millions of used cars are sold each year in the United States alone. This means that there is a healthy used car market you can profit from, provided that you learn a few tips about starting your very own used car dealership.

Tip number one is to look for the perfect location on which to establish the business. You need to be sure that you will locate an area where your used car dealership can easily be seen by customers. If you already have a location set up, prepare all the documents required to get a business and dealers license.

Tip number two is to visit your local DMV and apply for a dealers license. In most states you will be required to submit documents such as the deed to the location where the dealership will be set up; filled-up application forms, etc. Take the time to learn about these documents to prepare them before visiting the DMV.

To prove that you're a legit used car dealer, it is important to insure the business you are about to set up. Discuss surety bonds with your insurance providers and talk about coverage that suits your business needs and budget, of course. Having surety bonds protects your customers from being victimized by illicit deals on these used vehicles. More importantly, they're more comfortable doing business with a  dealer that has sufficient surety bonds on the used cars he's selling.

You need to start looking for used cars. In this case, you can check out online advertisements  newspaper ads posted by owners selling their cars and attending car auctions. Be sure that you will consult the Kelley Blue Book to get an idea how much the cars you are about to buy are worth before you make an offer.

You also need to work with local banks to provide financing assistance to your customers. Buyers are more confident doing business with used car dealerships that are partners with reliable, local banks and this helps you attract more customers.

Lastly, you need to advertise the business. You can look into advertising and marketing options that suit your needs and your budget.

  1. This is a great article with some good tips. I have bought a few used cars in the past and they have always ran great. One thing I always do is ask if I can have the car inspected myself. This way I can get the real truth about what shape the car is actually in. I would highly recommend this because you are not being lied to and you are not wasting money on a car that does not run good.
